Beginner Surfing Lessons in Waikiki: What 20 Years of Teaching at Hawaii's Most Famous Beach Has Taught Me

After more than 20 years of teaching surfing in Waikiki, I've learned something surprising.
The best surf lesson isn't always about surfing.
It's about removing everything that gets in the way of enjoying the experience.
I've taught thousands of students over the years. Some were first-time surfers. Others were experienced surfers visiting Hawaii who simply wanted local knowledge and access to the best waves.
What I've learned is that convenience matters. Comfort matters. Great equipment matters. And when those things come together in the right environment, people have a much better experience in the water.
That's one of the reasons teaching surfing from the Halekulani area of Waikiki is so unique.
You get the best beginner surf break on Oahu's South Shore, access to two nearby intermediate surf breaks, private instruction, premium equipment, and the comfort of one of Hawaii's most iconic luxury hotels just steps away.
Why Waikiki Remains One of the Best Places in the World to Learn Surfing
People travel from all over the world to learn to surf in Hawaii.
Over the years, we've taught guests visiting from Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, Toronto, London, Dublin, Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, Melbourne, and just about everywhere in between.
Many arrive thinking surfing is going to be difficult.
Many assume Hawaii's waves will be intimidating.
Most leave surprised by how approachable the experience actually is.
Waikiki's waves are incredibly forgiving compared to many surf destinations around the world.
Instead of steep, fast-breaking waves, Waikiki is known for long, rolling waves that provide plenty of time to stand up and find your balance.
That's why I've spent more than two decades teaching here.
The waves give beginners the opportunity to succeed.
The Closest Paddle to Some of Waikiki's Best Surf Breaks
One thing that makes surfing from the Halekulani different is how close you are to the wave.
There is no shuttle ride.
No loading surfboards into a vehicle.
No driving across town.
No spending half your lesson getting to the break.
Instead, you're just a short walk on the beach and the best beginner surf break on Oahu's South Shore. For more experienced surfers, there are also two nearby intermediate breaks that offer longer rides and additional challenges depending on the conditions.
You get private instruction, premium equipment, and the comfort of one of Hawaii's most iconic luxury hotels just steps away.
For families on vacation, that convenience is hard to overstate.
You spend less time commuting and more time surfing.
And after your lesson, you're immediately back in comfort.
The Luxury of Surfing Without the Hassle
One of the biggest challenges for visiting surfers is logistics.
Traveling with surfboards can be expensive and frustrating.
Board bags.
Oversized baggage fees.
Rental cars large enough to carry boards.
Roof racks.
Transporting equipment through airports and hotels.
For many guests, that's not how they want to spend their vacation.
That's why we provide premium equipment, including fiberglass surfboards for experienced surfers and high-performance beginner boards for first-time students.
Our guests can simply arrive, surf, and enjoy their vacation.
No extra planning required.
What Most Beginners Get Wrong About Learning to Surf
After thousands of lessons, the biggest misconception I see is that people think standing up will be the hardest part.
It usually isn't.
The hardest part is often paddling and positioning.
Holding your head up while paddling uses muscles that most people don't use regularly.
Even elite athletes are often surprised by it.
The good news is that standing up tends to happen much faster than people expect.
Nearly all of our students stand up during their first lesson.
Most stand up within their first three waves.
The key is proper instruction and a wave that's suited for learning.
Fortunately, Waikiki provides both.
Why We Only Offer Private Surf Lessons
Over the years, I've become a strong believer in private instruction.
Every student learns differently.
Every family has different goals.
Some guests are nervous first-timers.
Others are celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, or family vacations.
Some simply want a memorable experience together.
Private lessons allow us to customize the experience completely.
We can move at your pace.
Focus on your goals.
And provide individualized coaching throughout the session.
For beginners, it creates a much more comfortable and successful experience.
Family Surf Lessons Create Some of the Best Vacation Memories
Some of my favorite lessons over the years have involved families.
Parents and children.
Grandparents and grandchildren.
Aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
The surfing is great, but what people remember most is often the experience of doing it together.
Many adults arrive nervous.
Interestingly, adults are often more nervous than children.
I've had countless parents tell me they only got in the water because they wanted to set a good example for their kids.
By the end of the lesson, they're usually the ones asking when they can go again.
Surfing and Then Returning to Five-Star Comfort
This is one of the things that makes the Halekulani and Halepuna experience unique.
Most surf lessons end in a parking lot.
Ours don't.
After your lesson, you're just steps away from one of Hawaii's most luxurious settings.
Take a hot shower.
Wrap yourself in a plush towel.
Grab a fresh ginger shot.
Relax by the pool.
Enjoy lunch overlooking the ocean.
Or settle in with one of Waikiki's most iconic mai tais while watching the very waves you were surfing just minutes earlier.
There is something special about transitioning directly from an ocean adventure back into a world-class resort experience.
No driving.
No transporting equipment.
No dealing with surfboard logistics.
Just surfing, relaxation, and the comfort of a luxury Hawaiian vacation.
It's a combination that's difficult to find anywhere else in Waikiki.
Experienced Surfers Love the Location Too
While we teach plenty of first-time surfers, many of our guests have surfed before.
For experienced surfers, Waikiki offers much more than beginner waves.
There are several additional breaks nearby that offer more advanced opportunities depending on conditions and ability level.
In those situations, we often act more as guides and coaches.
We help guests understand the lineup.
Identify the best takeoff zones.
Improve positioning.
And maximize wave count during their session.
Sometimes local knowledge is more valuable than anything else.
Knowing where to sit and which waves to pursue can dramatically improve a surf session.
Why Good Surf Coaching Isn't Just About Standing Up
A lot of people assume the goal of a surf lesson is simply getting to your feet.
That's only part of it.
The most valuable skills involve learning how to read the ocean.
Learning patience.
Learning positioning.
Learning wave selection.
Understanding when to paddle and when to conserve energy.
These are the skills that continue helping surfers long after the lesson ends.
Whether it's your first time surfing or your hundredth, those fundamentals always matter.

What 20 Years of Teaching Surfing Has Taught Me
After thousands of lessons, I've learned that surfing is rarely about athletic ability.
It's rarely about age.
And it's rarely about talent.
Most of the time, success comes down to confidence, good coaching, and being in the right environment.
Waikiki provides one of the best learning environments in the world.
The waves are forgiving.
The scenery is unforgettable.
And when you combine great instruction, premium equipment, private coaching, direct access to some of Waikiki's best surf breaks, and the comfort of a five-star resort just steps from the beach, the experience becomes about much more than surfing.
It becomes one of those vacation memories people talk about long after they've returned home.
That's what has kept me teaching surfing in Waikiki for more than 20 years.
